Adopting a pet
Written from the sources below on 4 October 2026.
This site does not run adoptions and has no application form. The old page at this address held only a title and menu graphics, so nothing from it could be restored.
Find an organization
Adoption takes place through shelters and rescues. Find local help lists organizations by province, territory and state. The ASPCA also points people to national adoption search sites to see animals near them.
Before you apply
- Read how the organization handles adoption. Procedures, fees and timelines differ.
- Read each pet's description and photos, and ask whether the animal suits your household.
- Set up a safe space, put hazards out of reach, and buy supplies.
- Choose a vet near you, and consider pet insurance before you need it.
The first weeks
The ASPCA describes a 3-3-3 guide. A new pet may feel nervous for three days, take about three weeks to settle and show its personality, and need about three months to feel at home. Keep routines steady and be patient. If you cannot adopt yet, fostering helps a shelter too.
