Nassau County signs an agreement (undated)

Archive of the former Pet Safe Coalition's website. This site is not that group.

This news item from the former site, undated in the archive, said Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi had authorized a cooperative agreement with the group.

What the group said

  • Through a Statement of Understanding, the county and the group's member organizations would cooperate, as far as possible in a declared emergency, to give temporary shelter to a limited number of pets for the part of an emergency that threatens them.
  • The purpose was to keep owners from refusing to evacuate because of their pets.
  • It named the members as public animal shelters in Nassau County, a veterinary association, an SPCA, a horsemen's association, private humane groups and a restoration company. It listed some national groups as supporters that were not members.
  • It said the sheltering was a back-up for owners whose own plans fell through, not a convenience, and gave numbers for the county's people and pets (1.3 million people and 620,000 cats and dogs), four main evacuation routes and limited shelter space.
  • It said all equipment and supplies had been donated or paid for by the group and its volunteers, which depended entirely on donations.

These are the group's statements. We did not see the agreement itself, so we cannot confirm its terms.
