Press clip: The next great hurricane (2006)
Dated September 2006.
April Jimenez wrote "The Next Great Hurricane Will Hit Long Island Sooner or Later" for the Long Island Press in September 2006. It was a risk story built on the images of Katrina.
- A Suffolk Community College professor was quoted giving a one-in-eleven chance of a major hurricane hitting the New York area in 2006, and a 26 percent chance within 50 years. Those figures were forecasts then, not current numbers.
- It recalled the 1938 storm known as the Long Island Express, which it said killed about 600 people on Long Island and in New England.
- Emergency managers from Nassau and Suffolk counties described planning for many scenarios and for evacuating areas such as Fire Island.
- One section said the Pet Safe Coalition notes that Red Cross shelters did not accept pets for health reasons and urged owners to plan.
