Press clip: Pet Safe at the library (2007)

Dated 31 August 2007.

The group's vice president, Beverly Poppell, wrote this column in the Glen Cove Record-Pilot on 31 August 2007. It announced a hurricane preparedness program at the Locust Valley Library on 6 September.

In the column the group said that New York State agriculture officials had tapped it as Nassau County's official Disaster Animal Response Team, that it was a Homeland Security coalition partner, and that it had made more than 60 presentations that year. It said it had formed after flooding from Hurricane Floyd forced evacuations in 1999 and some residents of one island refused to leave because they could not take their pets.

It argued that loose animals after a disaster slow rescue and rebuilding and can raise health and legal problems for a whole neighborhood. It also said it had activated its plan during the April 2007 nor'easter, when a member animal group brought a van to the library for evacuees with pets.

These are the group's own claims, written by its own officer. Newspaper and magazine clippings belong to their publishers. This page summarizes the piece in our own words and links to the archived copy.
