The founder wrote this column, "Pet Safe: It's Time for a Plan", on 26 June 2009. It appeared in the Plainview-Old Bethpage Herald.

She cited a hurricane writer who said the New York City area is vulnerable partly because people are not prepared. She asked families with pets to send in their disaster plans for a monthly prize, which became the Pet Safe Families contest.

A good plan, she wrote, names a family member in charge, picks an evacuation route and a place to go, has a secure carrier for each pet to be evacuated, a kit for each pet and for each person, and shows that every family member knows how to carry it out. She said involving young people teaches responsibility and critical thinking.
