Hurricane seminar in Freeport (2010)

Dated 19 August 2010.

David Weingrad reported on 19 August 2010 about a hurricane preparedness seminar that Nassau County Legislator David Denenberg held at the Freeport Library. A representative of the Pet Safe Coalition was among the speakers pictured.

• A forecaster predicted an active 2010 season, with 14 to 20 tropical storms. That was a forecast for that year.
• He explained the difference between a tropical storm warning (sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph possible within 48 hours) and a hurricane warning (winds over 74 mph).
• Officials said Hurricane Gloria in 1985 was the last major hurricane to hit Long Island and that a direct Category 3 hit would put everything south of Merrick Road under water.
• Nassau County had four hurricane evacuation routes, and moving all residents of the South Shore evacuation zone could take over 24 hours.
