The Pet Safe Families contest
From June 2009 the former group ran a monthly contest called "Pet Safe Families". A family with pets wrote up its plan for keeping the animals safe in an emergency. The family with the best plan and resources won a prize.
What a good plan included
The group's founder wrote in a June 2009 column that a plan should name a family member in charge, pick an evacuation route and a place away from home, and have a secure carrier for each pet and a kit for each pet and person. Every family member should know how to carry it out. See the column.
Winners
- August 2009: a Port Washington family won the first contest, and a Nassau County legislator honored it with a county citation. See the press item.
- November 2010: a high school animal science student in Suffolk County won with a plan that had maps, routes off Long Island, a budget and a storage list. A county legislator presented her with a proclamation and said he would post the plan on the county website. Three runners-up were named. The account, supplied by Eastern Suffolk BOCES, is the source here.
Names of the families and the student are left out on purpose. The contest ended with the group.
