Workshop covered in a CERT newsletter, 2013

Posted on the former site on 1 August 2013.

On 1 August 2013 the former group reposted part of a newsletter from the Upper West Side Community Emergency Response Team. The newsletter covered the group's July workshop, "Animals in Disasters Workshop for Emergency Managers and Pet Owners".

It said emergency preparedness experts, volunteers and animal advocates took part in a half-day workshop at the Metropolitan College of New York. The group was quoted as saying that some people will not leave home without their pets and that many evacuation shelters will not take pets, so owners must make their own plans.

After the talks, the groups worked through a table-top exercise. Each was handed a floor plan of a single-story school and parking areas and had to turn it into a temporary animal shelter. A leader from each group presented its plan to everyone.

The post ended with outside resources for animal care and sheltering, including a New York City emergency management pet guide offered in four languages. The full story is in the group's own report.
