Movin' on: two cats fly to Oklahoma

The former group told this story in early 2013. Two cats, an 11-year-old and a one-year-old, had lived nearly two months at the Nassau County emergency pet shelter after Sandy destroyed their owner's home in East Rockaway. She decided to accept a friend's offer and move to Oklahoma.

The post said she had her own serious health problems after the storm and that a volunteer helped her get care. The group then arranged air travel for her and the cats, including the fares, carriers and a volunteer who flew with them to Tulsa.

At LaGuardia airport, the post said, baggage staff were not used to the situation. The cats and owner were nearly kept off the flight until a decision was made that there was no security threat. Everyone boarded in the final moments, changed planes in Denver and arrived.

The group's vice president was quoted saying the group wanted to keep pets and people together, and that the owner should not have to risk the trip alone. The post closed by saying the group's work did not cost Nassau taxpayers and that its volunteers were unpaid.

Owners are not named here, out of respect for their privacy. The photos were credited to a local photographer and are not restored.
