Tip 3: halters and labels for horses

Posted on the former site on 14 May 2013.

Horse and large-animal owners got their own tip in the 2013 series. It made two points.

  1. Every stall should have a well-fitting halter with the farm name and phone numbers, and a lead rope. The old tip said emergency workers cannot move a horse out of danger without one.
  2. Every stall should be labeled with the horse's name, recent medicine, health history, a vet number and the owner's emergency number. Someone who does not know the horse cannot give a vet useful details without it.

The ASPCA agrees that horses should be used to wearing a halter and to loading in a trailer, and that vet records and emergency numbers should be easy to reach, with 24-hour numbers posted by the phone. Ready.gov says every large animal should carry some form of identification.
