Tip 4: a buddy system for horses
Posted on the former site on 15 May 2013.
This tip was about the buddy system for horse owners, especially in areas that flood or burn.
- Arrange a farm outside the likely evacuation zone where you can trailer your horse before the emergency arrives. Offer to be someone else's buddy too.
- Make sure your local fire or rescue service has emergency contact numbers for your farm workers.
- Tell them where the water hookup, gas main and electric panel are, and give them keys to any gates that are locked after hours.
The ASPCA also recommends a phone tree or buddy system with nearby horse owners, so that you can share trailers, pastures and extra hands. Ready.gov says to leave early when you can, and to map a main and a backup route.
